Château Royal d'Amboise visitor guide — everything you need to know before visiting
The Château Royal d'Amboise stands on a rocky spur above the town of Amboise in the Loire Valley, about 25 km east of Tours. For a century it was a principal residence of the French kings: Charles VIII was born and died here, and François I grew up within its walls and made it a centre of the early French Renaissance. François I brought Leonardo da Vinci to Amboise in 1516, and the artist is buried in the château's Saint-Hubert chapel. Today visitors tour the royal apartments, the chapel and the ramparts and terrace above the Loire, with an included HistoPad tablet that reconstructs the rooms in augmented reality.
